Description
Summary:Fever is a risk factor for bacterial infection. There is debate about the high fever with increased morbidity in predicting serious bacterial infections (SBI). Various parameters including C-reactive protein (CRP), leukocyte count, and absolute netrophil count (ANC) has been analyzed to predict the occurrence of SBI but none really proven. Discrimination of patients with or without SBI can improve the quality of patient management. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk of fever, leukocyte count, ANC and CRP levels with SBI in children.    A case-control study, conducted by collecting data from medical records Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar and assessed retrospectively. The cases group was taken with diagnostic criteria serious bacterial infection (bacterial meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, bakteriemi or sepsis, urinary tract infections, bacterial gastroenteritis), with controls were patients with non serious bacterial infection. Data analyzed using bivariable methods and multivariable with level of confidence α=0.05. The basic characteristic of the subjects were similar between case and control groups. The result of multivariable analysis were fever 39 C with OR 8.71 (95% CI 1.61 to 46.98) and CRP 10 mg /L with OR 6.20 (95% CI 1.58 to 24.24). In this population study shown that fever 39 C with risk 8.7, CRP 10 mg/L with risk 6.2, as risk factors for SBI in children.
