Summary: | Environmental problem is a growing issue and become community concern to those
wanting comfort of life. The sugar factory is one of the contributors of pollutants, and its
pollutants are either solid, liquid and gas. This study aimed to assess the types of air
pollution and levels of air pollutants released by P G. Mojo Sragen during milling with
reference to the Quality Standards Emission Sources Not Moving to Sugar Industry Process
Sulfitasi And Karbonatasi In Central Java Province (Decree of the Governor Central Java
No. 10 of 2000), Ambient Air Quality Standards in the Province of Central Java (Decree of
the Governor Central Java No. 8 of 2001) and Air Pollution Standard Index (APSI). And to
examines the influence of air pollution from PG Mojo Sragen toward respiratory tract
disorders.
The Measurement of levels of pollutants was conducted on wind dominant and
subdominant-direction areas by radius of 300 m, 700 m, 1000 m, 1500 m and 2000 m from
PG Mojo Sragen. The subjects were 100 respondents residing around the measurement
area of sample levels of pollutants. The determination of respondents was conducted by
random samping. The questionnaire was used to determine the activity of respondent,
distance of the respondents reside at the region around PG Mojo, the activity of respondents
related to generate pollutants, and to determine their responds about the effects of air
pollution from PG Mojo toward respiratory tract disorders. Their responds were examined
by Chi-Square Test for Independence and Test for Homogenity.
The measurements results yielded content level of SO2, NO2, CO, and dust particles
in wind dominant direction are during milling time was higher compared to non milling time,
but still under the Quality Standard. SO2 levels during milling> not milling time, APSI
category and intermediate. NO2 levels during milling time> not milling time, yielded APSI
immeasurable. Dust particles levels during milling time> not milling time, yielded APSI of
healthy, oderate and unhealthy. The measurement results yielded air quality level become
two-fold compare to not milling time in subdominant wind direction area either in duration
of milling time or not.
Based on formulated results Kai-Square toward the respondents activity, such as:
burning garbage, polluted workplaces, respondents length of stay around PG Mojo, outdoor
activity duration, they were entirely affects the respiratory tract disorders suffered.
Respondents stated that smoking or not smoking, use of fuel for cooking, and use mosquito
repellent were not a major cause of respiratory tract disorders at location around the sugar
factories.
Respiratory tract disorders symptoms, such as cough, shortness of breath, fever, and
lethargy experienced by respondents residing at the area of the dominant wind direction.
Respiratory tract disorders symptoms suffered on milling time to the end of milling time.
Meanwhile, respondents living in the dominant wind direction area states that cough, cold
and asphyxiate were not affected by pollutants from PG Mojo. By lingking the measurement
result of ambient air quality, therefore, it concluded that PG Mojo pollutants can cause
respiratory disorders. |
