Summary:This research aims at understanding the nature and origin of Salonreng dance, and its symbolic meaning. The dance performed in Accera� Ase ritual ceremony. The researcher observed and recorded the performance in the field. Interviews about the dance were conducted involving audiences, local community leaders, dancers, and local artists of the community known as the basis of the development of this dance. Salonreng dance became known when the people of Gowa Kingdom were still believed in animism and dynamism. This dance performed to acknowledge respect to Batara, the god who rules earth and heaven and respect to ancestors� spirits. The Salonreng is an ancient dance, full of ritual nuances, and performed only on special ceremony. Based on structure and function analysis, it can be concluded that Salonreng dance is closely attached to the rules of the ritual ceremony. The dance is a part of the Accera� Ase ritual ceremony itself. The dance functions to reinforce the ritual ceremony, entertain the audience with esthetic performance. The obedience of Makassar people to the rules of ritual ceremony make the structure of this dance relatively static, particularly from the point of entertainment. Salonreng dance is considered as a tool for communication with spiritual world, which believed to have power for maintaining the harmony between micro and macrocosms, which is governed in line with the tradition of Makassar people. The existence of Salonreng dance in the community of people of Manggala district at the present time is supported by ritual function. Symbolic meaning this Salonreng dance in Accera� Ase ritual ceremony is a channel of communication between human nature with the supernatural which is believed to affect to kasannangngang pakmai, spiritual happiness for those who perform.
