Description
Summary:Making a war in the life of Korupun people had its root deep in its religious system and was considered to be holy and their forefathers made it obligatory. If they did not make any war, any thing appertaining to cropping, hunting, trading and so on would result in cutbacks. Tribal war represented the center of the religion in Korupun culture and was inseparable of their life. However, disorientation took place when new religion and government open the isolation of their region for good purpose and banned their indigenous religious values that were considered to be wrong. A respondent told the author, When making a war is banned and what we consider to be right is forbidden, so who we are now? They were required to be highly careful to other tribes. It would be wiser that outsiders understood them and did social and cultural transformation based on the existing local values and considering the profane aspects of their daily life related to the war. Power along with the right to have many wives, gardens and pigs was in the tribe obtained with brevity bravery in the war. Those who managed to conquer other tribes were considered to be those highly regarded. They were contradicted to those who were unimportant and meaningless. The effort to defend the territory of Korupun tribe became the responsibility of the tribal head Honai and his members. Our understanding that the responsibility for the sovereignty of the tribe was in the hand of the tribesmen was wrong. They were responsible to provide their tribal head Honai with support and help in defending their tribal territory. Cooperation and synergy between the tribal head Honai and his tribesmen must be strengthened, though the principle responsibility for defending their tribal territory was in his hand. Another role played by the tribal head Honai was to expand their territory. The expansion took place when a tribal ware took place and the enemy was conquered. The war decision was made when a dispute over tribal garden or forest took place and the conqueror had the right to expand their tribal territory and it was established in a custom ceremony by slaughtering pigs, while the conquered was prohibited to change the territorial establishment decision. The control by the tribal head Honai in the management of natural resources and in the preservation of natural living environment function played an important role and it resulted in the presence of the rights to use and to enjoy the existing natural amenities and it reduced in turn the tribal conflicts. The custom laws related to the management of the natural resources must be sustainable. Additionally, the tribal head Honai must play an active role in making use of the access and in controlling the use of the natural resources in order to protect public rights and also custom rights. Another role of the tribal head Honai was to take care of the damage of the natural resource and to take any possible effort to prevent it to be worse, including illegal logging and the control of the natural resources by other tribes. The increase in the illegal logging must be controlled in order to reduce the environmental damage, the use of unsafe fuels, excessive forest opening for agricultural purpose, and the use of the forest without any consideration of environmental support and capacity. Tribal conflicts in Papua in general and especially in Korupun was not something new. The conflict took place almost periodically. The causal factors might be garden border dispute, the dispute of tribal head Honais territory, and women. So, there was a wide range of problems with many related aspects that the tribal head Honai in Korupun must deal with and not limited to the problem of how to provide his tribesmen with prosperity. Therefore, the tribal head Honai was responsible for maintaining the social order in the tribal allies and for the enforcement of the existing custom laws. The daily activities of the tribal head Honai included all aspects of the life of his tribesmen. No aspect of the life of the tribesmen that the tribal head Honai could not interfere with in maintaining the tranquility, the peace and the balance of the spiritual and material life of his tribesmen.
