Summary:Walter Spies, a German artist, lived and spent all of his life time in Indonesia. There, he gave a lot of contributions in the development of Yogyakarta and Bali arts, not only as a musician, but also as a painter, dancer, choreographer, and curator at the same time. Early in his age, he visited the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, which then opened his eyes and perception in the existence of Indonesia. After he arrived and involved in several of Yogyakarta and Bali arts, he created a new genre of Kecak dance and pentatonic musical works. The objectives of this study are to know, and understand the contributions of Walter Spies to the development of art in Indonesia, especially Yogyakarta and Bali, and also the background story of his successful findings in creating attractive composition that used pentatonic idiom. This research employed several approach, they are: first, history approach � to observe the life of Walter Spies and his involvement in the Western music during his stay in Yogyakarta�s palace, and also the development of art in Bali
