Summary:The study entitled \"Contemporary Art in Yogyakarta From the year 1975 Until 2010: Identity and Change\" motivated by the fact that since 1975 in Yogyakarta emerging paradigm of art work that upholds the spirit of pluralism. The phenomenon of pluralism in the work of art is increasingly seen in the 1990s, along with the inclusion of works of art from Indonesia to the international forum. To understand the contemporary art of Yogyakarta is a necessary part of research with a focus on cultural identity of the works of contemporary art, and the paradigm shift underlying the production of works of contemporary art in Yogyakarta especially those produced from 1975 until 2010. This research is a type of multidisciplinary research with the main method of art history, so the procedure begins with the collection of primary data sources and secondary form of visual and written data. The next stage is to conduct a critique of the data source to obtain data that have high credibility. Furthermore, the data that have been selected and analyzed with semiotic approach hermeneutics. The results of analysis of written and visual data longer then interpreted by considering the context or the motives behind the production of works of art. The next stage is the stage of historiography or writing the results of research focused on cultural identity that is reflected from the works of art, and the paradigms underlying the changes in the manner and form of works of art. The last stage is the explanation or clarification that is preparing arguments that links between the work of art with a socio-economic, socio-political, and socio-cultural. The results showed that cultural identity is reflected in the works of contemporary art in Yogyakarta include: diaspora and ethnic identity, gender identity (feminist), the identity of the public (urban public art), the identity of the media arts (crafts, design, charcoal), the identity of the body, identity political, and cultural identity of Java. Paradigm in the production and reception of art has undergone a change. Artists do not put a new discovery that individual, and universal, but uses strategies of irony, parody of the work and other cultures, characterized by relational, dialogical and pluralistic. The study also found that the contemporary artists of Yogyakarta lintasdisiplin approach, taking advantage of artisans, and collaborate with fellow artists or by non-experts in the work of art. The role of curators, galleries, and collectors is quite important in encouraging the production of contemporary art.
