Description
Summary:Reconstruction of bone defects remains an important problem in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Restoration of bone defect sites with autogenous cancellous bone grafting materials is a valuable approach to the solution of this problem. Bone defects may be regained by osteogenesis, osteoinduction, osteoconduction or guided bone regeneration. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the essential components of extracellular matrix, which plays a predominant role in tissue morphogenesis, cell migration, differentiation, and adhesion. The study aims to find out the effect of 0,8% hyaluronic acid jelly application towards bone recovery process following mandibular bone defect by observing new bone formation. In this study, two cavities of 3mm diameter and depth have been created in the mandibular bone of 12 mature guinea pig in accordance with the principles of general surgery. One of the cavities in the mandibular bone is filled with 0,8% hyaluronic acid jelly and autogenous cancellous bone graft and the other is filled with only autogenous cancellous bone graft, for the purpose of control. On the 7 th and 14 th days, guinea pig have been sacrificed in equal numbers and defective regions have been extracted. The Mann-Whitney U test and KruskalWallis test was applied to the data obtained in the result of histopathologic survey of specimens. The result of study suggest the cavities that have been filled with 0,8% hyaluronic acid jelly and autogenous cancellous bone graft give significant effects to the speed of bone defect recovery following mandibular bone defect
