Summary:This study was conducted at Kulon Progo coastal area of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta Province. This research�s goals are to study constituent parameters of coastal geoecology system to define geoecosystem units spread, to evaluate suitability of existing settlement zone to the characteristic of geoecology tipe, to inventory environment issues and to set direction of settlement zone development which accommodate characteristic of geoecology type, include the environment management and settlement zonation strategy in Kulon Progo coastal area which safe from disaster and sustainable. The approach used in this research is geoecology approach which based on geomorphology process and landform as a basic setting of geoecosystem unit as an analytical unit. The Method used is survey with sampling technique using stratified random sampling. Data analysis in descriptive analysis and spacial modeling using Arc Gis vertion 9.3 program, resulted environment management strategy and settlement area zonation in coastal area of Kulon Progo formed by using SWOT analysis method. This research resulted identification of geoecosystem units in this area. The largest area are dominated by coastal alluvial plain geoecosytem unit as 2.685,461 Ha (43,05%) and sand dunes geoecosystem unit as 1.986,121Ha (31,84%). Old beach ridge geoecosistem unit and coastal alluvial plain are the most suitable, based on geoecology characteristic, as a direction of settlement area zonation development. This recommendation of environment management strategy and settlement zonation comprehensively to solve whole environment issues and integrated by involving whole stakeholders.
