Description
Summary:Management of plastic waste by pyrolysis can reduce the burden of environmental pollutants, can also produce valuable products. The addition of additives polyethylene (PE) on the pyrolysis of polystyrene plastic (PS) can affect the quantity and quality of the product. The study was conducted to study the effects of polyethylene additives on the quantity and quality of polystyrene pyrolysis products. Raw materials used were polystyrene styrofoam food containers and polyethylene plastic wrap as an additive. Variation of the amount of additive is 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% by weight of raw material. Pyrolysis process carried out at temperatures of 450 C and a residence time of 60 minutes. The results showed that the addition of PE in PS plastic pyrolysis gave no significant effect on the calorific value of oil produced. The addition of PE (up to 40%) in the pyrolysis of PS resulted in impairment of kinematic viscosity and specific gravity of oil produced, but the magnitude of reduction is not significant (less than 5%). Significant changes occurred in the pyrolysis oil was flash point, from 20.5 ° C on PS oil to less than 10 ° C in PS + PE oil. The test results of GC / MS showed an increase in the amount of styrene (from 57% to 64%) and toluene (from 12% to 14%) in PS pyrolysis oil with additive PE of 10%. Based on the characteristics and composition, the PS + PE oil can be used as an alternative fuel or as raw material for chemical industry.
