From 1953 to 1970, under King Sihanouk's government, French was the only language officially used in school's curriculums. It was used in all sectors of Cambodia at that time. Under Lon Nol's Khmer Republic (1970-1975), French and English were used due to the American involvements (politics and military) in the Indochina War. The study of English was also encouraged. Under Pol Pot's Democratic Kampuchea (1976-1979), no formal education was implemented, and the study and use of foreign languages was severely prohibited. From 1979-1986, Vietnamese and Russian were the languages officially included in school's curriculums and the study of French and English was prohibited. If one was found to be learning either the language, he/she would be severely punished and even imprisoned. Then in 1989, French and English appeared again, and since 1993 election and afterward, English and French have been the languages to be learned and taught in CambodiaenRoyal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP)Education and JobRoles of EnglishStudents' perspective on the roles of English in Phnom Penh, Cambodia: a case studyThesis |
