Description
Summary:This project involves in studying the general geology of Semanggol Formation at Kg Balek Bukit, Bukit Merah, Gunung Semanggol which emphasis on stacked channel axis reservoir texture and fabric. The Semanggol Formation lies west of the main range Triassic granite in the Bentong-Raub suture zone that was formed due to the collision between Sibumasu Terrane and Sukhothai Arc during Triassic. The Semanggol Formation exposed in the Northwest part of Peninsular Malaysia that extends from North of Perak to North of Kedah. There are three informal members of Semanggol Formation; lower Chert member, middle Rythmite member and upper Conglomerate member (Burton, 1973). Hutchison and Tan (2009) found that the sediment of this formation is tightly folded overlain by sandstone-shale interbeds. There are three main areas of this formation which are Padang Terap (North Kedah), Kulim-Baling (South Kedah), Gunung Semanggol (North Perak) (Hutchison & Tan, 2009). The study area for this paper is focus on the Semanggol Formation at Gunung Semanggol, Perak. There are lacks of studies in general geology and lack of details in the geological map of the Semanggol Formation at the North of Perak compared in Kedah. This is why this research is conducted in order to improve the details of the geological mapping and indirectly to demonstrate the field observation experience. The project began by collecting journals and papers related to the studies through the website and library. Several geological fieldworks are also being conducted for sampling and logging. All the data gathered will subsequently use to construct the geological map and cross section of the Semanggol Formation. Furthermore, the sample taken was brought to the lab for the thin section analysis. Then, the thin sections have been studied to understand the texture and fabric of stacked channel axis reservoir. Based on the interpretation of the thin section, geological data and logging a tectono-stratigraphic model of Semanggol Formation has been constructed.
