GEOLOGY OF THE LUMUT AREA AND THE IMPACT OF COASTAL POLLUTION ALONG THE COASTAL FACIES

Geology of Lumut and Seri Manjung can be simplified chronostratigraphically into Permo-Late Triassic granite and Quarternary sediments. The intruded granite of Lumut is classified as S-type (Norzaini Karim and Teh), and Bignell and Snelling (1977) suggested that the age of the granite in the Lumu...

The intruded granite of Lumut is classified as S-type (Norzaini Karim and Teh), and Bignell and Snelling (1977) suggested that the age of the granite in the Lumut-Segaru-Pantai Remis area is Late Triassic. Meanwhile, the unconsolidated sediments in the coastal areas of Taiping, Beruas and Lumut have been divided into three stratigraphic units by lithology, heavy mineral content and paleoenvironment (Suntharalingam, 1982). Suntharalingam and Teoh introduced the Gula Formation and Beruas Formation (Young Alluvium) in the area of Lumut and Seri Manjung. This project study the Quartenary sediments distribution in the scale of 1:25, 000 which is more in detailed compared to the Dindings area done previously by Suntharalingam (1:300, 000). It has been summarized and illustrated based on Suntharalingam that Lumut and Seri Manjung Quarternary sediments originated from Beruas Formation and Gula Formation. The classification of the environmental vulnerability of Lumut coastal facies will be generated based on the vulnerability index of the Gundlach and Hayes – which utilizes the scale of one to ten. This project will analyses the nature and composition of coastal facies sediments and assesses the impact of oil pollution by oil spills on the facies and thus determining the shoreline sensitivity to oil spills. The coastal impact on the coastal facies will be evaluated through the oil penetration test which helps to characterize the vulnerability index of the Lumut coastal facie. It is hoped that the result for this project will yield mitigating measures to tackle future plausible coastal pollution in Lumut coastal areas.
