Description
Summary:The importance of automatic generation control (AGC) in the field of power system cannot be denied due to the demand of a reliable and stable power supply. AGC in power systems is implemented to retain reasonable constant frequency, to control the schedules of tie-line interchange in different power system areas and to split the load among generators. The performance of AGC has to be optimized properly by selecting suitable parameters of control elements in the system. In this work, performance optimization of AGC for two-area power system is proposed using particle swarm optimization (PSO) by selecting suitable parameters of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. The proposed method using PSO algorithm was compared with the system without PID controller, with a PID controller in one area only and a PID controller in all areas. From the results obtained, it was found that PSO and a PID controller in both areas of the system is the most suitable technique for optimizing the performance of the AGC for power system of two-area. © 2021 IEEE.
