Summary: | Michelia alba D.C. (Magnoliaceae) has been used widely in the indigenous system of medicine. Studies on the extract of Michelia alba identified several compounds that exhibited biological activity. However, the species has not been studied in detail and information on the properties of compounds from Michelia alba is limited. The phytochemical studies carried out on the leaves of Michelia alba were extraction, fractionation, isolation and purification. Thin layer chromatography and column chromatography were performed for the isolation and purification of compounds. Further purification of fractions E02 and E04 with preparative thin layer chromatography afforded two semi pure compounds, E2T2 and E4T2 respectively. E2T2 has a molecular weight of 177 and Rr value of 0.30 in hexane-ethyl acetate (4:1). E4T2 gave a molecular weight of 223 with Rr value of 0.48 in hexane-acetone (7:3). The ethyl acetate crude extract and fractions exhibited significant toxicity on Anemia salina larvae. Fraction E04 showed LD50 value at the concentration of 100 !J.glmL. |
