Description
Summary:After getting an unsatisfactory results during the twelfth general elections in 2008, the Barisan Nasional (BN) government should find other ways to get the support from the people. One strategy adopted by the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak: as soon as he took over the leadership from Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was to launch a policy of "People First, Performance Now". The introduction of this policy, had opened up a variety of perceptions from various parties. Some had responded positively by providing support, whereas others responded negatively saying that such policy was only temporary. The aim of this study is to analyze the differences and similarities of the 1Malaysia concept that is understood by the Malays and the Chinese in the vicinity of Satok commercial area in Kuching. With the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, studies have examined the contents promoted on the basis of the privileges given to the Malays, the issue of racial equality, racial sensitivity, and explore the view on the access to education, employment opportunities and economic and politics. Thus, this study allows us to fathom the feeling of dissatisfaction among the Malays and the Chinese in the area and allow us space to fmd out the weaknesses of the policy and to enable us to improve on it. In the fmal analysis this study find that although the Malays and the Chinese share similar views on IMalaysia policy, they still hold different opinion on other issues, particularly on racial issue. The perception of 1Malaysia concept could reflect the extent of racial solidarity and conflict in the country.
