Prospecting for the Insecticidal Properties of Methanol Extracts from Millettia atropurpurea (Wight & Arn), and Cinnamomum iners (Schaeffer) against American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (Linnaeus) and Weaver ant, Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius)

Summary: | The insecticidal properties of methanol extracts from M atropurpurea and C. iners against American cockroach, P. americana were tested using topical toxicity test. The methanol extract from M. atropurpurea has shown mortality effect against the nymph of the American cockroach. Nymph that was treated with 0.5 ppm w/v of methanol extract from M. atropurpurea shows 100% mortality. Whereas, 0.4 ppm w/v of the extract shows 75% of mortality and 0.3 ppm w/v shows 50% of mortality. However, no mortality was recorded for test specimen that was treated with 0.2 ppm w/v of the extract and the methanol itself. There is no toxicity effect obtained from the test that used methanol extract from C. iners on nymph of cockroach. Duration for the observation of the effect for both methanol extracts from the two plant species against the nymph was 24 hours. LD5o for methanol extract from M atropurpurea is 0.3162 ppm w/v, whereas, the LD9o is 0.3932 ppm w/v. The topical toxicity test of methanol extract from M. atropurpurea was also carried out against Weaver ant, Oecophylla smaragdina. LD50 obtained from the test is 0.1709 ppm w/v. The LD90 is 0.2617 ppm w/v. Result of LD30 for topical test using C. iners against Weaver ant is 0.1887 ppm w/v and LD90 is 0.2823 ppm w/v. |
