Summary: | This article explores and discusses the definition, origin, method, practice, context, and potential theorization of co-creation as a form of community engagement through visual arts. Through a qualitative analysis of usungan parade co-creation project at the khatamal al-Quran event in Kabong, Sarawak East Malaysia as a case study, it explores the
experiences and interpretation of the community towards the
phenomenon of co-creation. The study was based on participant observation and interviews with a sample drawn from family leaders, usungan makers, and audiences. We establish six factors of community engagement and co-creation model based on how participants can be evaluated. Then we describe how each family group derives value and
interpretation from their co-creation activities. The objective is to establish a strong case in pursuing an in-depth study of co-creation especially in deploying it for the benefit of a particular community. This research has shown how co-creation can contribute to closing the gaps between the arts and society, especially a 'non-art affiliated' community. |
