Summary: | Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) can be implemented at any time without relying
on an infrastructure to initiate a connection in the targeted area between the components
of the network. These types of networks are known as self-configured networks and the
transmission of the packets are done through the network layer via routing protocols
that are responsible for finding the best route between the source node and the
destination node. Routing protocols play an important role in terms of the performance
of MANETs. Therefore, it is important to study and investigate different routing
protocols from different classes of MANET.
Routing protocols can be categorised into three categories Hybrid, Reactive, and
Proactive. In this work, four routing protocols, AODV, OLSR, DSDV, and DSR, from
the Reactive and Proactive categories are investigated and evaluated using the Random
Way Point (RWP) mobility model for the performance of a few groups of 50 - 250
nodes using simulation on the NS-3 network simulator. The packet receiving rate and
End-to-End delay were analysed for each routing protocol in the determined
environment.
The results revealed that reactive routing protocols have better performance in low- and
medium-density networks than the proactive category. However, in high-density
networks, proactive protocols are more efficient, and OLSR, with relatively less delay
and more throughput, has the best performance. |
