TDR is a reflectometry technique where the injected signal is reflected when there is an impedance mismatch detected. A degraded cable insulation has a lower impedance compared to the ideal cable insulation. Hence, theoretically a degraded cable section can be pinpointed from the reflected signal due to the difference in impedance between these two mediums. This principle has to be investigated in actual application and thus, a series of experiments are conducted on various combinations of cable insulation condition with a single joint using the TDR application. Results obtained from these experiments have proven that the TDR theory is practical and can be used for sectionalizing degraded cable. Section three in this paper discusses in detail the findings of all experiments conducted with the TDR application. 2018 Institution of Engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.
