Summary: | Dam failure can cause loss of human life and massive damage to the property, particularly in downstream areas due to the limited time available for warning and evacuation. Therefore, it is essential to establish a comprehensive dam safety management system that incorporates all aspects of dam management. To mitigate the risks of dam failure, owners and regulators must conduct thorough inspections to identify potential failure modes and take necessary measures to prevent them, ensuring the safety of surrounding communities and the environment. As part of its commitment to corporate responsibility and as a responsible dam owner, Badan Kawal Selia Air (BKSA) Melaka has taken the initiative to develop an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for Durian Tunggal Dam to proactively safeguard downstream residents and property against the potential risks and impact of dam failure. This paper outlines an overview of the comprehensive process undertaken to prepare the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for Durian Tunggal Dam, encompassing a nine (9) step approach to develop a well-designed and effective EAP that can facilitate appropriate responses and actions in the event of an emergency incident affecting the dam, thereby ensuring the safety of surrounding communities and the protection of property and the environment. As a result, the final EAP document is established according to the guideline which includes the flood evacuation route map that serves as a valuable resource for assessing and managing the risk of flooding, aiding in development planning, raising public awareness, and facilitating the planning of evacuation centres and routes during flood events. The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023. |
