Summary:said Hawwa was a dedicated scholar-activist who had meticulously studied spiritual education. A prolific author, he promoted Islamic spirituality that is blended with reformism. In his book, Tarbiyatuna al-Ruhiah, Said Hawwa espoused the tasawuf that should havebeen practiced by the Muslims especially those activists of da'wah (propagation). He even re-conceptualised ilm al-tasawuf with the subtle objective of relieving it from the perception of exclusivity and elitism. He hoped to disseminate to the masses the ilm altasawuf as each and every Muslim is in need of it and therefore he/she should understand it properly and correctly. In this article, the author discusses the views propounded by Said Hawwa on tasawuf and its characteristics as well as studies in ilm al-tasawuf. The author also discusses the meanings of ruh, akal, al-nafs and al-qalb within the context of ilm al-tasawuf, kasyaf, ilham, dreams, karamah and mujahadah, as well as other aspects that rejuvenates spiritual activities.
