Summary: | Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems are moving toward adopting the STEP-NC data interface model as their future standard. It has been developed for use in subtractive manufacturing with great success, but its use in additive manufacturing is still in the research and development stage. The incorporation of STEP-NC into the CNC system is still an open and present challenge. This article presents a method for making use of the STEP-NC data interface model for 3D printing. The method makes use of the CAD data of either the ISO10303 or ISO 14649 data interface model in part 21 of the physical file representation. A system is being developed to generate the tool paths necessary for 3D printing from STEP-NC part 21. It has been carried out on a 3D printer through the utilization of indirect and interpreted STEP-NC programming techniques. In order to carry out 3D printing operations, the system makes use of tools that are based on virtual component technology and are controlled by a particular algorithm. The paper presents both the design and development of tools and algorithms, experimental study, and potential future directions. |
