Description
Summary:Due to the complexity and uncertainty in the planning process in addition to the dynamic nature of urban planning and management, it is particularly important to have a well conceived information system, which can serve as the eyes and ears to development planning and monitoring processes. On the other hand, an effective urban planning and monitoring system will need to have the capabilities to accommodate strategic planning, facility management as well as problem solving. This paper will discuss various initiatives undertaken by several local urban governments through the application of information and communication technology (ICT) for improving the quality of urban planning and monitoring. Several related aspects such as the automation of the database, organisation of the system to facilitate ad-hoc query, analysis and development control as well as the use of planning support systems to enhance spatial modelling for the purpose of development planning and control will be the main focus. Development of web-based GIS to encourage public participation and establish system integration for data sharing between planning authorities will also be discussed.
