Basin Evaluation Of Co2 Geological Storage Potential In Malay Basin, Malaysia

Recently there is an alarming increase of carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. This has encouraged researchers to actively think of alternative solutions on how to manage carbon dioxide that are often released from fuel consumption and petroleum production. One of the most discussed solutions is...

Taib, A. Mazlan, A. N. TA Engineering (General). Civil engineering (General) Recently there is an alarming increase of carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. This has encouraged researchers to actively think of alternative solutions on how to manage carbon dioxide that are often released from fuel consumption and petroleum production. One of the most discussed solutions is geological storage in unoccupied saline aquifer. Therefore, this paper discusses the suitability of the Malay Basin as a potential geological storage for CO2 and storage capacity estimation by using CSLF and US-DOE methods. The potential injection zone is then identified and estimated that this basin can store 84 Gt to 114 Gt CO2. Malay Basin is found to be the most suitable basin for CO2 geological storage purpose for it has abundant and enormous unoccupied deep saline aquifer. This study is anticipated to be a starting point for future researchers to further study in this area and also as a cornerstone for policy makers on future planning in CCS. Springer Phung, D. L.
