ASSESSMENT OF THE PALEOZOIC CLASTIC DEPOSITS OF SERI ISKANDER AS AN ELEMENT OF A HYDROCARBON SYSTEM AS POTENTIAL HYDROCARBON RESERVOIRS

The Clastic sequences outcropping at Seri Iskandar are part of the Paleozoic sedimentary sequences in Kinta Valley. Not much is known about this pre-Tertiary Clastic despite. the fact that, Hydrocarbon reserves have yet to be discovered in Paleozoic formations of Malaysia .Over the years, some effor...

Not much is known about this pre-Tertiary Clastic despite. the fact that, Hydrocarbon reserves have yet to be discovered in Paleozoic formations of Malaysia .Over the years, some efforts have been made to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of pre-Tertiary deposits (Tjia, 1999) and initial observation of Paleozoic sedimentary sequences in the Kinta Valley suggests the presence of elements of a Paleozoic hydrocarbon system (Pierson et al., 2009).Yet, no study to date has probed the pre-Tertiary Clastic outcrops in western part of Peninsular Malaysia seeking to document the Paleozoic deposits and predict whether this Paleozoic clastics or its time-equivalent is part of an effective Paleozoic hydrocarbon system. This study aim to document the Paleozoic clastic deposits of Seri Iskandar provide an extensive sedimentology analysis and assets the clastic deposits of Seri Iskander as potential Hydrocarbon Reservoirs. Methods of investigations were divided into field work and laboratory analysis. Four outcrops were investigated with total beds Thickness 685 meters; these outcrops consist of alternating beds of sandstone, mudstone siltstone. Some beds stacked relatively in vertical position and locally folded. Sedimentary structures have been recognized in this clastic beds contain, load cast, graded bedding, lamination, burrow tracks, fracture infill and slumps. Seri Iskander clastic deposits are mostly equivalent to the Kati beds, that described by Foo and dated as carboniferous to Permian age (Foo, 1990). It may presume that these beds of clastic could be deposited on the lower part of marine slope. Its considerable thickness and sand properties indicate that they have good potential to form reservoir. 2012-06-12 Conference or Workshop Item PeerReviewed application/msword http://eprints.utp.edu.my/8353/1/Hissein_ICIPEG_2012.docx Chow Weng Sum, Chow (2012) ASSESSMENT OF THE PALEOZOIC CLASTIC DEPOSITS OF SERI ISKANDER AS AN ELEMENT OF A HYDROCARBON SYSTEM AS POTENTIAL HYDROCARBON RESERVOIRS.
