Summary: | The purpose of this study is to identify the factors heading to weaknesses and problems in mathematics in art stream students in the district of Kota Bharu. In this study, three elements that need to be identify namely students demographic factors (gender, race, academic achievement and student altitudes), family factors (socioeconomic and parent commitment) and school factors (teacher and school facilities). A sample of 30 mathematics teachers and 120 form four students from three grade A secondary schools and three grade B secondary schools in the district of Kota Bharu are involved in the
study. Data are collected by questionnaires with 0.9577 Alpha Reliability Coefficients. Statistical Packages For The Social Sciences (SPSS) 7.5 for Windows were utilised to analyse the data. The study has identified two factors that have significant relationship with student’s
achievements in mathematics, that is gender and their achievement in mathematics during Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR). T-test shows that gender and grade of school have no effect in different achievement in mathematics. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test shows that there is no different achievement in mathematics based on mathematics result in PMR and family total income. On the other
hand, Multiple Regression Test shows that independent variables such as gender, family income, PMR result, school facilities, family factors and student factors have the effect on their achievement in mathematics.
