Summary:The purpose of this study is to identify the relationships between the achievement of English and students’ home background, students’ attitude and commitment in the District of Seberang Perai Selatan. 310 of 1469 form four students in the District were chosen as sample. Data was collected through 45 item questionnaires constructed on a 5 likert scale. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Statistical took such as Pearson Correlation, t-test, One -Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Multiple Regression were used to test the hypotheses. The 0.05 level of significance was used for this study. The findings of this study shows that there are significant relationships between gender, race, monthly income, main language used at home, place of stay during studies and type of school attended at primary level towards the achievement of English. The most dominant variables that influence the achievement of English are school environment, monthly income, main language used at home, type of school attended at primary level and gender. Based on these findings, several suggestions are proposed to upgrade the level of English achievement.
