Summary:In globalization, a serious barrier that people from different countries and cultures have to face is language differences. Among a lot of languages, they must choose a common language to share information, and English is that language. Nowadays, English is considered an important tool of communication for people around the world. Observing English as a global language in the light of crosscultural communication, the researcher can see a lot of varieties of English such as English as an International Language, English as a Lingua Franca, etc. which are no longer belong to British or American culture. An assumption is that English becomes culture-free due to the saturation of too many cultures. Through this study, the researcher tries to answer this question as well as explore definition, new labels and impacts of English as a global language. It is also an endeavor to uncover the implications of teaching and learning EGL. In short, it is the first step in presenting some characteristics of EGL in cross-cultural communication.
