THE ADAPTATION PROCESS OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS IN HANOI = Quá trình thích nghi của sinh viên Nigeria với cuộc sống ở Hà Nội

The cooperation between Greenwich University and FPT University since 2010 has opened a new door for African students who want to take higher education on technology and business. Among them Nigerians are dominant and the number of them coming to Hanoi to study is on the rise. This study was conducted in a hope of investigating the adaptation process of these students to life in Hanoi, thus promoting mutual understanding among all the involved parties: Nigerians, Vietnamese, course designers and student services. Six students from different majors and campus of FPT were chosen to take part in the semi-structured interviews which lasted up to half an hour. The results suggested that they adapted well to the physical environment, however, they underestimated the importance of discovering Vietnamese culture and its citizen, thus, they have much difficulty living and working in Vietnam, especially in communicating with locals due to their low Vietnamese proficiency and ethnocentrism. Further study on this part of the population is strongly recommended to find out how they adapt culturally, to find out the effect the other factors influenced and also how to make life easier for these people
