Description
Summary:Entitled Holden Caulfield - A Rebel with a Delicate Soul in J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, the paper looks at the complexity in the personalities of Holden Caulfield, the teenage protagonist of the classic novel The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. Specifically, the thesis focuses on highlighting Holden’s sensitivity and fragility; wrapped inside his outward rebellious actions and attitudes towards society, especially the adults. In particular, the defiant Holden expresses extreme hatred toward the adult world, rejects social customs and desires to be isolated from the world. Simultaneously, his delicacy is shown when he instinctively searches for a sense of connection and belonging and is deeply touched by the acts of kindness. Most importantly, Holden shows great affection toward the young and yearns to protect their innocence. Additionally, through Holden’s opposing yet candid outlook on life, the ugly truth of the contemporary American society is revealed with its unreasonable stress on prosperity and lack of human values. Finally, the conclusion is drawn that Holden is merely a young and lost soul in a faulty world.
