Summary: | The publication of Wuthering Heights can be considered the watershed to the fame of its author – Emily Bronte in the world’s literature in general and English literature in particular. This masterpiece is listed among the most celebrated literary works of all time not only for its tactful structure but also for its creativeness in characterization.
This graduation paper attaches importance to the similarities and differences between the two Catherines – the two main heroines in this novel. As such, it contains three main parts. The first one is introduction which includes rationale, working method and scope of the study. The second part – development is divided into three chapters. Chapter one deals with general information about literature by answering three questions: “what is literature?”, “what is fiction?” and “what are the main elements of fiction”. Then comes the background knowledge about England in Victorian time ranging from social setting to men and women’s roles. Chapter two surrounds Emily Bronte and Wuthering Heights followed by more details about her career, writing style, the summary of the novel and the story behind it. Chapter three puts the emphasis on the finding of similarities and differences between the two Catherines. The last part – conclusion summarizes all of the findings of this graduation paper that the researcher has found out and gives possible explanation concerning the messages transferred in the comparison between elder Catherine and young Cathy. |
