Among his novel treasure, “Man of Property” was paid much attention from not only readers but literature critics for its sense of property revealed among Forsytes, particularly Soames. Actually, the purpose of this thesis was to investigate the sense of property in Soames – the Man of Property in the novel “Man of Property” by John Galsworthy. This sense of property was examined in four aspects: his characteristics, his hobbies and his treatments towards his property as well as his wife. First, the theoretical background was overviewed. This part found out answers for three questions: What is literature? What are the functions of literature? What are outstanding features of English society and literature late 19th century early 20th century? Then, the novel the “Man of Property” and its author – John Galsworthy were examined. Galsworthy’s life, literal works are given, followed by the summary of the novel, brief introduction about its characteristics and Forsytism - its noticeable theme. The focus of the thesis - the sense of property in Man of Property was carefully analyzed.
