Summary:Jane Austen is acclaimed world-wide as one of the most beloved and celebrated novelists in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Among many of her well-known writings, the novel “Persuasion”, her last completed novel, seems to gain close attention from both readers and critics for its biting satire on the landed gentry as well as its romance. Actually, this graduation mainly concentrates on the character Anne Elliot, who is considered as an admirable heroine in the novel “Persuasion”. As such, it contains five major parts. The first part presents the rationale of the study, the study’s aims, scope and significance, and its research methodology. The second part is an overview of the general theory on literary fiction, which addresses the questions “What is literary fiction” and “What are the components of a fiction”. The next part is all about Jane Austen’s life and literary works, followed by three crucial sections: the social, historical and graphical background, some salient characteristics of this novel and the succinct summary of the novel. The fourth part, also the emphasis of this paper, performs in-depth analysis on the protagonist Anne Elliot in “Persuasion”. This part emphasizes the desirable characteristics of this main heroine. The last part is the conclusion which summarizes all the findings the writer of this paper has found out. It is indisputable that in the list of the most leading representatives of English literature, the name Jane Austen occupies the dominant position owing to her distribution in literature. In her writings, not only she does know the way of emphasizing characters’ beauty in mind but also touches on some seriously social issues, including the complex class and gender relations in the early- nineteenth century English middle-class society.
