Description
Summary:Scientific surveys have demonstrated the richness in biodiversity of Tien Yen and Dam Ha districts, with a variety of ecosystems and species. The mangrove ecosystem of northeastern Quang Ninh province in general, and of Tien Yen and Dam Ha districts specifically, plays a very important role and generates great services to the socio-economy and the environment of the area. It performs a great role in coastal protection, protection from typhoons and storms and erosion prevention, especially in the context of climate change. It is home to many valuable aquatic species which local people heavily depend on. Nevertheless, the mangrove ecosystems there have been under great pressure from population growth and development activities as well as ineffective management measures. Community-based conservation management (CBCM) is a natural resource management process which involves those people who are dependent on the natural resources, with scientific and technical assistance from scientists, and mechanisms and financial support from the local authorities. The CBCM model has demonstrated its positive results in natural resource management and conservation in the coastal and estuarine area in the context of sustainable development and climate change.
