Summary: | Climate change is a topical issue because of the large-scale global impact it is expected to
have on economic life and human society. According to estimates of the Intergovernmental
Committee on Climate Change (IPCC), by 2080 approximately 332 million people living in
coastal and low-lying land will have lost homes due to flooding and sea level rise, including
32 million in Vietnam. Vietnam ranked five of the countries most heavily affected by climate
change (Waibel, 2008). According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment,
over the last 50 years (1958-2007) in Vietnam, the average temperature has increased about
0.5-0.7oC and the sea level has risen about 20 cm (Bộ Tài nguyên và Môi trường, 2009).
Recognizing the risks of climate change to the sustainable development of the country, the
government of Vietnam has approved the national target programs to cope with climate
change. The study done by the Rockefeller fund, conducted by the Center for Meteorology and
Hydrology Consulting and Environment, within the framework of the implementation of the
urgent tasks of the national target program, is evaluating the impact of climate change on the
development of sectors and localities. In this study, Quy Nhon City was selected as a pilot
study area.
To assess the impact of climate change, based on the climate change scenarios for Quy Nhon
City, the following steps are being undertaken:
- Assessing the impact of climate change on factors where the damage is high
- Forecasting what other elements are vulnerable to serious impacts of climate change
- Developing scenarios and climate change flood maps corresponding to Quy Nhon City.
In this report we present some research results of the first step in evaluating the impact of
climate change on Quy Nhon City. |
