Summary:Prior to any speech act performance, the speaker has to make two kinds of judgments: the sociopragmatic and the pragmalinguistic ones. The former are social and culture specific as they rest upon the speaker’s assessment of contextual factors the importance of which differs from culture to culture. It is sociopragmatic decisions that are the basis for the second kind of judgment of how to perform the speech act. Sometimes, as a result of the sociopragmatic judgments lead to the decision to opt out of the speech act by the speaker. Thus, investigations the opting out choice of a certain speech act are within the field of pragmatic research. These investigations provide useful and insightful information not only about the nature of the speech act, but also about cultural values and beliefs of the speaker. Criticizing is a highly face -threatening act, which is often opted out in face-to-face interactions. The factors leading the decision to opt out might be vary with different cultures. This paper presents a study on the factors affecting the choice not to perform the speech act of criticizing by American people. The factors found include those related to the conditions for criticizing, the seriousness of offence, the goal of criticizing, and contextual factors of social power and distance. The information obtained by this study can be useful for cross-cultural research on the weight of social and situational variables given by different cultures.
