That languages, with different viewpoints towards different colors, view the world rather differently through their native languages and reflect specifc cultural characteristics of different nations. The frst aim of this article is to introduce fundamental physical and linguistic features of basic color terms. The second one is to present international and domestic researches performed on basic colors terms, particularly in terms of lexical analysis as well as in connection with culture and cognition. Hopefully, more knowledge regarding to distinctive cognitive systems between English and Vietnamese languages can be provided to native speakers in both nations in raising their awareness related to the potential differences and similarities of basic colour terms in the other languages. Hệ thống các ngôn ngữ, với quan điểm khác biệt đối với màu, quan niệm khác biệt thông qua ngôn ngữ bản địa, nhằm phản ánh những đặc tính riêng biệt về mặt văn hóa của những dân tộc khác nhau. Bài báo giới thiệu đặc tính vật lý và ngôn ngữ cơ bản của từ vựng màu sắc cơ bản cũng như tóm lược kiến thức nghiên cứu trước đây liên quan đến chủ đề từ vựng màu sắc cơ bản, cụ thể trên phương diện phân tích từ vựng và trong mối liên hệ giữa văn hóa và tri nhận. Hy vọng rằng bài báo cung cấp thêm những hiểu biết về tri nhận giữa hệ thống ngôn ngữ tiếngViệt và tiếng Anh giúp người sử dụng hai ngôn ngữ này nhận biết những đặc điểm giống nhau và khác biệt rõ ràng và sâu sắc của các màu cơ bản.
