Halos magkasabay ang panahon ng pagsibol at pamamayagpag noong dekada ’80 ng “Post-colonialism” (PC) sa Kanluraning akademya at ng Pantayong Pananaw (PP). Kasabay rin ng dalawang penomenong pang-intelektwal na ito ang naganap na pangkalahatang paghina ng Kaliwa dulot ng pagguho ng “Pader ng Berlin” noong 1989. Masalimuot ang ugnayan ng PC at PP sa Marxistang tradisyon ngunit malinaw na maibibilang ang dalawang ito, sa kontekstong Pilipino, sa mga intelektwal na sanhi ng krisis ng Marxismo sa larangang akademiko sa Pilipinas. Bilang tugon sa ganitong sitwasyon, magkasunod na inilathala ang dalawang kritika mula sa Marxistang punto de bista ng PC (Chibber 2013) at ng PP (Guillermo 2009). Gayunman, mapapansin na higit na historiko-sosyolohikal ang lapit ni Chibber samantalang epistemo-metodolohikal naman ang kay Guillermo. Maliban dito ay totoong higit na “internasyonal” ang impak ng PC at pati ng kritika ni Chibber. Sisikaping paghambingin ang dalawang kritika na ito upang malinawan hinggil sa kanilang naging mga ambag, limitasyon, at pangkalahatang bisa. Partikular na bibigyang diin ang usapin at mga katanungan hinggil sa kategorya ng “unibersal” sa akda ni Chibber. (The rise of Post-colonialism (PC) in the Western academe and of Pantayong Pananaw (PP) in the Philippines occurred almost simultaneously in the ’80s. These two intellectual phenomena also coincided with the general weakening of the Left after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Both PP and PC have complex relations with the Marxist tradition but it is clear that these can be included among the intellectual factors which contributed to the crisis of Marxism in the academic sphere, particularly in the Philippines. In response to this situation, two critiques from Marxist perspectives of PC (Chibber 2013) and of PP (Guillermo 2009) were published in quick succession. One notices however that Chibber’s approach was more historico-sociological, while Guillermo’s was epistemo-methodological. Aside from this, PC and its critique by Chibber were definitely more “international” in impact. This paper will attempt to compare these two critiques and assess their contributions, limitations, and general effects. Special emphasis will be given to the category of the “universal” in Chibber.)
