Escuadra, Catherine Joy T. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are universal, indivisible, and transformative objectives set by the United Nations to guide global development. Achieving these goals requires collaboration between industry, government, and academia. Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a crucial role in this process due to their contributions to research, innovation, and knowledge dissemination. Previous reviews have underscored the need for more publications and collaborations among HEIs related to SDGs both globally and regionally. However, no comprehensive review exists for the Asia Pacific region. This review aims to analyze the status and evolution of higher education for sustainable development research in the Asia Pacific, focusing on international, regional, and multi-country partnerships. A bibliometric analysis was conducted, assessing publication and citation patterns, mapping collaborative networks, and identifying thematic clusters of related research. The keywords “higher education” and “sustainable development goal OR SDG” were used to extract English publications from the Web of Science. The analysis utilized the Web of Science analyzer and VOSViewer 1.16.19, including 582 studies published from 1997 to 2022. The top three countries in the region for SDG publications were China (n=140), Australia (n=128), and India (n=67), with a total of 8,949 citations and an H-index of 42. Collaboration clusters included (a) China, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, and UAE; (b) Malaysia, Jordan, Pakistan, and India; (c) Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam; and (d) Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Nepal. Text co-occurrence analysis revealed four key themes: (a) innovations in education for SDG integration; (b) challenges and barriers; and (c-d) health and welfare of women and children. The evolution of research themes showed an initial focus on general SDG outcomes (e.g., health, education, poverty), shifting later to academic matters (e.g., student motivation, teaching methods). These themes reflect issues specific to developing nations in the Asia Pacific, which were not highlighted in broader global reviews. This review aims to inform policymakers, educators, and researchers by highlighting research trends, collaborative dynamics, and thematic concentrations. It offers strategic insights to enhance cross-border collaboration and the impact of SDG-focused research in the region, contributing to the advancement of sustainable development in higher education institutions. 2024-09-30T07:00:00Z text application/pdf https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/apssr/vol24/iss3/3 info:doi/10.59588/2350-8329.1540 https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/context/apssr/article/1540/viewcontent/2Ponce.pdf Asia-Pacific Social Science Review Animo Repository Sustainable development goals Higher education Asia Pacific Collaborative networks Bibliometric analysis
