A Systematic Review on Umbilical Cord as an Effective and Cost-Beneficial Alternative for Stem Cell Therapy
The high cost and limited accessibility of bone marrow-derived stem cell therapy pose substantial challenges to its widespread adaptation. In contrast, the umbilical cord, often discarded as biomedical waste, offers a promising and cost-effective source of stem cells with therapeutic potential. This...

Chin, Frances Claire A. Manalo, Hanna Leila S. The high cost and limited accessibility of bone marrow-derived stem cell therapy pose substantial challenges to its widespread adaptation. In contrast, the umbilical cord, often discarded as biomedical waste, offers a promising and cost-effective source of stem cells with therapeutic potential. This study aims to investigate the potential cost savings and medical benefits that could be derived from using umbilical cord stem cells as an alternative to bone marrow in stem cell therapy. The study conducted a comparative analysis systematically reviewing existing research using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. The study compared the procedures, treatments, and outcomes of bone marrow- and umbilical cord-derived stem cell therapy. While both types of stem cells have demonstrated similar outcomes, with certain illnesses and procedures benefiting more from the former. The expenses of stem cell therapy can vary according to several factors, including the type, method, and location. The result reflects the importance of the umbilical cord and its capacity to develop further in self-regeneration 2024-06-11T22:30:00Z text application/pdf https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/conf_shsrescon/2024/paper_fnh/1 https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/context/conf_shsrescon/article/2372/viewcontent/PP_FNH_Barcelona_Chin_Manalo___Ashley_Janelle_Barcelona.docx.pdf DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Animo Repository bone marrow cost efficacy stem cell therapy umbilical cord |
