This study made use of the psycho-social method, which involved the participation of 200 elderly-100 of which lived with their families while the remaining 100 lived in the Golden Acres institution. There were also an equal number of male and female represented in the study. These said categories are just incidental and they were just included for they influence the results' generalizability. The said respondents were interviewed and a checklist questionnaire was also employed in acquiring the needed information. In analyzing the data, the interviews were content analyzed while the checklist questionnaires made use of frequency counts and then converted into percentage. Finally, the top five frequency of the checklist questionnaire and analyzed interviews serves to characterize the elderly's perceptions of friendship. The findings, which appealed to a majority of the elderly, indicated that friendship is a form of love that bind individuals. Moreover, it was revealed that respect, acceptance, comfort, advise and enhancement of self-image were the functions of friendship for the elderly. Good manners, similar interests and views, good conversationalist and talented were among the qualities the elderly look in a person for them to become friends. Nonetheless, the qualities found to be constructive by most of the respondents in a friendship included supportiveness, sincerity, understanding, humility and caring.
