Investigating the relationship between personality and music preferences through the cognitive schematic perspective

The present research further investigated the relationship between personality and music as proposed by Rentfrow and Gosling's (2003) theory of music preferences by using a new methodology. The current researchers approached the theory from a cognitivist perspective, emphasizing the schematic organization of personality and priming techniques that were incorporated into the SuperLab program for experimenting. Four personality traits out of the Big Five Inventory were primed and the reaction times of 245 undergraduates at De La Salle University were observed for any significant differences to the four music dimensions from the theory. The findings provide general support for Rentfrow and Gosling's theory but also raised questions with regards to two music dimensions that may be more similar than distinct.
