Description
Summary:This paper deals with the causes and consequences of pregnancy loss. Meaning and attribution given for the pregnancy loss is also covered. This paper is a descriptive study which focuses on six married women who had pregnancy loss. Case study is the method used for the study and an unstructured in-depth interview is conducted with the six participants including their respective husbands. There was also an interview done with three practicing obstetrician-gynecologists. A series of psychological tests were also administered to the participants to measure their self-concept, body-esteem, depression, and marital relationship. From the responses gathered, it was found that majority of the respondents attributed the cause of the pregnancy loss to be environmental and occupational in nature or simply God's will. Values placed on having children are categorized into economic and emotional benefits obtained from having a child. Psychological consequences of the pregnancy loss include feelings of sadness, grief, and depression. However, results in the psychological tests revealed that the participants' self-contest, body esteem, and marital relationship were not greatly affected. Results also show that they were not highly depressed . In coping with the pregnancy loss, the respondents rationalized the event while avoiding the topic at the same time. Also included is the acceptance of pregnancy loss which is aided by the closeness of the family significant others.
