Procrastination and locus of control: The effect of students' locus of control on their procrastinatory behavior

This study determined the relationship between students' locus of control and procrastinatory behavior through the implementation of two phases. 150 Filipino college students were recruited for the first phase the participants completed both Rotter's Internal-External Scale and Lay's Procrastination Scale in order to establish their locus of control and procrastination levels, respectively. For the second phase, 20 high procrastinators, either having an internal or external locus of control, from the 150, were interviewed in order to find out whether they procrastinated in accordance with their respective orientations. Data for the first phase were correlated and a significant relationship between procrastination and locus of control was determined. Furthermore, it was found out that a significant relationship between internal locus of control and internal procrastinatory behavior existed however, the relationship between external locus of control and external procrastinatory behavior was not as clearly defined.
