The development, validation, reliability, and norming of the Panukat ng Kabuuang Pagkatao

This study was conducted for the purpose of contributing to the filipinization of psychological testing in the Philippines. Its aim is to develop an instrument that is designed to measure the level of Subjective Well-Being (SWB) of Filipinos. The Filipino concept of SWB, Kabuuang Pagkatao (KP), and its structure were arrived at through indigenous research methods known as ginabayang talakayan and pagtatanung-tanong . Two ginabayang talakayan sessions were conducted with 4 psychology graduates each. People coming from offices, schools, and hospitals with ages ranging from 40 to 65 participated in the pagtatanung-tanong . To determine the number of items to make up the test, a survey was conducted to individuals similar to those in the second indigenous method used. A total of 261 items were formulated for the item pool. These were than reviewed by a Filipino professor and 5 psychology degree holders for their appropriateness to the scale, clarity, and grammar. One hundred sixty-eight items were retained and comprised the initial form of the test. This was then administered to 50 individuals whose ages range from 40 to 65, working in manufacturing and service-oriented companies. Further revisions resulted to a total of 145 items for the main try-out form which was administered to 150 respondents similar to those in the pre-try-out. Scores obtained were factor analyzed to establish the validity of the test. Remaining items were further subjected to item analysis using the item-remaining items correlation. Those with a correlation coefficient of less than .4 were eliminated. To establish the reliability of the test, coefficient alpha was applied to the remaining items. Out of the 15 factors which obtained a reliability coefficient greater than .7 were considered to make up the test. Thus, the instrument developed is comprised of 7 subscales with a total of 63 items. Separate norms for each subscale and the whole were constructed and expressed in percentile ranks.
