Coping with environmental stressors: A study on coping mechanisms of the Payatas community

The study describes how residents of Payatas cope with environmental hazards. 30 respondents were obtained through a non-probability purposive sampling and underwent a semi-structured interviewed in what they perceive as threats in the environment and how they appraise the threat, how they appraise their coping capabilities and what coping strategies they observe. Subjective well-being was then measured. Results show that residents perceive threat from people in the environment, poverty, and the physical environment, mainly the dumpsite. Responses were classified as active (problem-focused) and passive (emotion-focused). Filipino values and social support were identified to be the predominant coping mechanisms.
