Description
Summary:Ciguatera is a disease caused by ciguatoxins, which accumulates in the flesh and viscera of fishes. Ciguatoxins (CTX) are produced by the unicellular, microscopic, benthic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus. These ciguatoxins were isolated and purified from yellow fin tuna, Thunnus albacares, acquired from Masinloc, Zambales and Odiongan, Romblon. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Electrospray ionization Mass Spectroscopy (ESI-MS) were employed to verify the presence of CTX in the fish samples. Mouse bioassay was performed to determine its toxicity. CTX extracted from Romblon samples showed positive results in mouse bioassay and MS analysis.
