Guilty as charged: A study of sexual guilt as a mediator in the relationship of sexual ideology and sexual behavior

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of sex guilt on the relationship between sexual ideology and sexual behavior. The Sexual Attitude Scale, Mosher Guilt Inventory and Human Sexuality Questionnaire were administered to 351 Filipino young adults, comprised of students and non-students from six different locations by non-probability convenience sampling. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, simple linear regression and multiple regression. Results showed that Filipino young adults remain conservative in their sex ideology and sexual behavior, and are also high on sex guilt. Additionally, findings proved that sex guilt is a mediator in the relationship of sexual ideology and sexual behavior of Filipino young adults, applying full mediation effects. These resulting effects were used to determine implications and contributions to the Philippine society at present, including its impact on Filipino psychology, institutional campaigns and government programs.
