Summary: | A survey on the level of acidity of rain in Metro Manila is being conducted to come up with an acid rain map which will serve as a reference or preliminary report for those who intend to conduct future study.
Monitoring the level of acidity of rain is conducted by installing rain collectors at different collection sites. This includes industrial, commercial, and residential places in Metro Manila. One sampler is installed in the power plant, and another is located on top of De La Salle University-Center ofr Engineering, Research, Training, and Consultancy (DLSU-CERTC) where rain is automatically collected and analyzed by an acid rain monitor. Others are in the commercial-residential places in Muntinlupa, San Juan, Pasig and Malabon.
The study also takes into account the rate of corrosion of galvanized iron exposed at two locations namely at DLSU-CERTC (Taft Avenue) and at the power plant. The rate of corrosion of galvanized iron exposed in the power plant is higher compared to the one exposed at DLSU-CERTC because of the presence of high sulfate concentration at the power plant. |
