The adoption-related problems and coping mechanisms of two types of adoptive parents-A comparative study.

Adoption is an alternative way of adding a member into the family. It involves changes, acceptance among the family members. The adoptive parents and the adopted child are most affected by the changes being encountered. These changes may bring about adoption-related problems between the adoptive parents and their adoptee. Limited literature related to adoption triggered the researchers' curiosity and interest in this subject matter. The purpose of this study is to compare adoption-related problems encountered by adoptive parents. The adoptive parents were divided into two groups: adoptive parents without any biological child prior to the adoption and adoptive parents with at least one biological child before the adoption. The researchers also wanted to find out how the two groups of adoptive parents handled their adoptees in terms of their parenting styles. Purposive and chain referral sampling were used in gathering the twenty participants for this study. An interview guide was constructed and used to facilitate the interview process. Each interview was tape-recorded and transcribed for the analysis of data. Based on the conducted interviews, results showed that there was no difference in the adoption-related problems encountered by the two groups of adoptive parents. Both groups experienced similar problems in handling and disciplining their adoptees.
